Last week in the municipality of Santiago do Cacém was marked by a series of operational incidents and security records that mobilized local resources. With the temperature at 18 degrees and partly cloudy skies in this late August, the daily dynamics of the region crossed civil protection warnings with police authority interventions in the Alentejo Litoral.
Between August 25 and 29, Civil Protection recorded several incidents, highlighting road cleaning situations and hazard signaling in the parish of Santo André. Interventions were recorded on Rua Fonte do Cortiço, Travessa do Alecrim, Rua dos Malmequeres, and near the local campsite, mobilizing ground operators to ensure road safety and pedestrian circulation.
Operational activity also included responding to a bottled gas leak on Rua dos Caniços, in Santo André, which occurred on August 26, mobilizing seven operators and two ground vehicles to the scene. On the road front, the period recorded a collision near Estrada Nacional 121, near a commercial establishment in the area, as well as run-off-road accidents recorded on Estrada Nacional 120, in Aldeia dos Chãos, and on Estrada Nacional 121, in Abela, with the latter incident marked by the mobilization of 12 operators and five ground vehicles.
In parallel with rescue and road safety activity, the National Republican Guard reported criminal investigation operations in the region. The Setúbal Territorial Command, through the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Santiago do Cacém Territorial Detachment, arrested a 47-year-old man for drug trafficking in the neighboring municipality of Sines, in an operation carried out on August 27 following another similar arrest made on August 21.
At the national level, the same security force issued public alerts regarding the increase in scams associated with simulated traffic accidents, a phenomenon that accumulated considerable losses for victims during the first half of the year and that deserves special attention from the local population and more vulnerable residents.
Despite the operational commotion, the heritage and natural offerings of the municipality remain fully operational for residents and visitors, highlighting places such as the Castle of Santiago do Cacém, the Roman Ruins of Miróbriga, the Municipal Museum, and the Santo André and Sancha Lagoons Nature Reserve.
For citizens who need additional clarification on security procedures or who wish to report anomalous situations on public roads, the available official sources do not specify additional direct contacts beyond regular emergency channels and local authorities.
